Superwhisper alternatives for Mac
Choose the tool for the result you need
If you're looking for a Superwhisper alternative for Mac, start with why you want to change. People usually leave Superwhisper for one of three reasons: the cost of Pro, wanting cloud polish without choosing and configuring models, or wanting what they say to end up somewhere other than the current text field.
Each reason points to a different tool. The table below compares Superwhisper with Aureon and five other options, from macOS Dictation to local-model apps such as MacWhisper, VoiceInk and Spokenly.
We build Aureon. This guide uses the vendors' published information, checked on October 30, 2026. It is a selection guide, not a hands-on accuracy or speed ranking.
The short answer
| Your priority | Consider | The trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Create new notes, tasks, reminders, events or Notion pages from a spoken request | Aureon | Review the plan first; Mac-focused, cloud AI, and a paid plan after the trial |
| Cloud dictation on every device without managing models | Wispr Flow | Audio is processed on its servers; weekly word limit on the free desktop plan |
| Transcribe recordings and meetings on your Mac | MacWhisper | Some features need Pro, a one-time purchase |
| Open-source local dictation, paid once | VoiceInk | Apple silicon Macs only |
| Free local dictation that works offline | Spokenly | Cloud models need your own API keys or Pro |
| Enter text without adding another app | macOS Dictation | Available features and languages vary |
Superwhisper's free plan already includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. If cost is your only reason to leave, check whether the free plan covers what you use. Superwhisper plans.

Aureon for intent that needs a destination
Aureon is an AI input and workflow layer for Mac. Superwhisper's AI modes reshape the text you dictate. Aureon's Intent Cast goes one step further: it turns a spoken request into new items in supported connected apps, such as an Apple Note, a reminder, a calendar event or a Notion page.
You review a plan before anything is created. Supported destinations are Apple Notes, Apple Reminders, Apple Calendar, Mail drafts, Notion, Obsidian and Flomo. Each needs its own setup, and connecting one app does not give Aureon access to every app on your Mac. Explore Intent Cast.
For everyday input, Aureon also offers AI Dictation, Smart Actions and Voice Translation. AI Dictation cleans up speech while preserving its meaning and tone. See Aureon's dictation and voice polish.
Know the limits before switching
Aureon uses cloud AI. It has no local-model option: Aureon does not run local models, which is the main reason a Superwhisper user might not switch. It is not an offline alternative, and it has no permanent free plan.
Its connected-app workflows create new items. It does not automatically send your email or freely edit, delete, and reorganize existing third-party content. Close the plan preview without confirming and nothing is written; once you confirm, check each result in its destination.
Wispr Flow for cloud dictation without managing models
Wispr Flow is a cloud dictation app for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Its privacy page says dictation audio is sent to its servers over an encrypted connection, transcribed, and discarded unless you turn on cloud storage. Wispr Flow privacy.
Consider it if you liked Superwhisper's cloud models but do not want to choose and configure them. The free plan includes 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 per user per month billed monthly. Wispr Flow pricing. For a broader comparison, see our Wispr Flow alternatives guide.
MacWhisper for local transcription on your Mac
MacWhisper focuses on transcribing recordings, meetings and audio files on your Mac, and also offers system-wide dictation. The developer says transcription runs on your device. Consider it when your work starts with recordings rather than live dictation into another app.
There is a free version. Pro is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription, and the listed price depends on your region. MacWhisper on the developer's store.
VoiceInk for open-source local dictation
VoiceInk is a Mac dictation app that transcribes with local models, as Superwhisper's free plan does, and its source code is public. VoiceInk source code.
It requires an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later. Licences are one-time purchases by number of Macs, with a free trial and a 14-day refund window. VoiceInk pricing.
macOS Dictation for a built-in starting point
Try macOS Dictation first if you mainly speak into text fields. It is included with macOS, and Apple says you can check Keyboard settings to see whether general text dictation is processed on your device. Apple's Dictation guide. For the difference between direct text entry and a reviewed draft, see Aureon vs macOS Dictation.
Spokenly for free local models with an optional cloud plan
Spokenly runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. Its free plan uses local Whisper and Parakeet models, works offline and needs no account, and you can connect cloud engines with your own API keys. Spokenly plans.
Local+ is a $29 one-time purchase for extra features. Pro, at $15 per month billed monthly, adds cloud models and AI text cleanup without your own keys.
When staying with Superwhisper makes sense
Stay with Superwhisper if local models are a requirement, if you want to choose between local and cloud models yourself, or if you need one licence across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. One Pro licence covers all of those devices.
Pro is $8.49 per month, $84.99 per year, or $249.99 once for a lifetime licence. If cost is the issue, compare those options before switching. Superwhisper plans.

Aureon Plus includes 5,000 AI-generated output characters per day, shared across AI input and workflows. Max has unlimited AI output subject to reasonable-use and safety protections. The trial ends after seven days; continued cloud AI use requires Plus or Max. Aureon plans.
Try the same real task before you decide
Use a few non-sensitive examples from your own work:
- A short message with a name, a number, and a correction. Check whether the final text preserves every important detail.
- A paragraph in the language you actually use. Count the edits you need before it is usable.
- A task with a destination. Decide whether you need text at the cursor or a new item in another app.
- Your usual setup. If you relied on Superwhisper's local models, test the alternative with the same microphone and network conditions.
Judge the result you can use and the corrections you need. A feature list cannot tell you how a particular tool handles your vocabulary or workflow.
Questions about switching from Superwhisper
Is there a free Superwhisper alternative?
Yes, depending on what free means to you. macOS Dictation is included with macOS. Spokenly has a free plan with local models that work offline, and MacWhisper has a free version. Wispr Flow also offers a free plan with its own limits. Superwhisper's own free plan already includes local Whisper dictation, so check whether you need to switch at all.
Does Aureon run local models?
No. Aureon uses cloud AI and has no local-model option. If processing must stay on your Mac, Superwhisper's local models, Spokenly, MacWhisper or VoiceInk fit that requirement better.
Which Superwhisper alternative works offline?
Spokenly's free local models work offline. MacWhisper and VoiceInk transcribe on your Mac. Test any setup with the network turned off before relying on it. Aureon does not work offline.
Is Wispr Flow a good Superwhisper alternative?
It can be if you prefer a cloud service and do not want to manage models. Wispr Flow's privacy page says dictation audio is sent to its servers for transcription. It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, its free plan has a weekly word limit on desktop, and Pro costs $15 per user per month billed monthly. Our Wispr Flow alternatives guide compares more options.
What happens after Aureon's trial?
Aureon offers a seven-day trial with Max-level access. It has no permanent free plan; cloud AI features require a paid plan after the trial. No subscription is required to start the trial.
Can Aureon put a spoken request into Notion or a task app?
Yes. Intent Cast can create a new Notion page or a task in Apple Reminders after setup and confirmation. Existing content is not silently rewritten.
Will Aureon send emails or messages for me?
No. Sending remains your action. Aureon can prepare an email draft for you to review, but that does not authorize it to send a message, delete content, or change an existing record.
Try Aureon with a task that needs a destination
Start with one real request: capture an idea in Apple Notes, add a reminder, or prepare an email draft for Mail. Check that the result preserves what you meant and reaches the place you chose.
Seven-day Max-level trial. No subscription required to start. Paid plan required for cloud AI after the trial.
