Best dictation apps for Mac: choose by what you need after you speak.

Most Mac dictation apps put words at your cursor. They differ in where your speech is processed, what they cost, and what happens after you speak. Here are nine options, sorted by that, from each vendor's own published information.

AUREON

You say

“Can we move the review to Thursday at 3?”

What you need next

Words at your cursor, a transcript of a recording, or a new event in Calendar
Local or cloudFree plan or trialLive dictation or files

Start with the built-in option, then choose by the job.

If you dictate occasionally, macOS Dictation is free and built in. If you want speech processed on your Mac, look at Superwhisper's local models, Spokenly, VoiceInk or MacWhisper. If you want one cloud setup across Mac, Windows and your phone, look at Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice or Willow Voice. If what you say should become a reviewed note, task, event or draft in another Mac app, that is the job Aureon is built for.

We build Aureon, so treat this as a selection guide rather than a neutral review. Every row below comes from the vendor's own pages, checked on October 30, 2026. We did not run speed or accuracy tests, because results depend on your microphone, accent, vocabulary and network.

Two jobs often get mixed up. Live dictation types what you say into the app you are using. File transcription turns a recording into text afterwards. MacWhisper is built mainly for the second job; most of the other apps here are built for the first.

Choose a dictation app in three steps.

  1. Start with macOS Dictation

It is included with macOS. Turn it on in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and try it on a real message. If it is enough for you, you are done.

  2. Decide where your speech may go

If audio must stay on your Mac, shortlist apps with local models and test them with the network turned off. If cloud processing is fine, compare free allowances and cleanup.

  3. Test your shortlist on one real task

Most of these apps have a free plan, a free version or a trial. Say the same few sentences from your own work in each, including names and numbers, and keep the one you need to correct least.

Three questions decide most choices.

Feature lists look alike. These three questions separate the apps.

Where is your speech processed? Some apps run models on your Mac and can work offline; others send audio to a cloud service. If audio must stay on your device, that one requirement narrows the list quickly.

What do you need after you speak? Words at the cursor, a transcript of a recording, and a new item in another app are different jobs. Pick the app built for yours rather than the one with the longest feature list.

What will it cost once you rely on it? Free plans differ: some cap words per week, some leave out features, and some are trials. Compare the plan you would actually use, not just the starting price.

Questions about dictation apps for Mac.

Short answers based on each vendor's published information.

What is the best dictation app for Mac?

It depends on what you need after you speak. For occasional text entry, macOS Dictation is free and built in. If your speech must stay on your Mac, shortlist apps with local models, such as Superwhisper, Spokenly, VoiceInk or MacWhisper. For one cloud setup across Mac, Windows and your phone, compare Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice and Willow Voice. If a spoken request should become a reviewed note, task or event in another Mac app, that is what Aureon is built for.

Is there a free dictation app for Mac?

Yes. macOS Dictation is included with macOS. Superwhisper, Spokenly, MacWhisper and Willow Voice also offer free plans or versions, and Wispr Flow's free plan includes 2,000 words a week on desktop. Each free option has its own limits, so check the vendor's current plan.

Does Mac have built-in dictation?

Yes. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard, go to Dictation and turn it on, then use the Dictation shortcut in any text field. Our speech to text on Mac guide covers the shortcut, languages and fixes.

Which dictation apps work offline on Mac?

Apps that run local models can work without a connection: Superwhisper's free local models, Spokenly's local models, VoiceInk and MacWhisper. macOS Dictation can process general text on device in some setups; check Keyboard settings. Turn the network off and test before you rely on it.

What is the difference between dictation and transcription?

Dictation types what you say into the app you are using, as you speak. Transcription turns an existing recording into text afterwards. Most apps in this guide are built for dictation; MacWhisper is built mainly for transcribing recordings.

Is Aureon a dictation app?

Partly. Aureon includes AI Dictation, which types what you say at your cursor and can tidy spoken phrasing in its optional Enhanced mode, but its main job is turning what you say into reviewed items in your Mac apps, alongside actions on selected text and voice translation. It uses cloud AI, runs only on Mac, and has a 7-day trial rather than a permanent free plan.
